RGT Planet is being developed commercially in 30 countries and trialled in 44 across Europe, North and South America and Africa, as well as New Zealand, and is now poised to grab a large share of the important Australian spring barley market.
Chris Black, RAGT’s international cereal product manager says: “RGT Planet has come top in every region of Australia’s National Variety Trials over the past two years. It has also passed its first assessment for malting barley approval and should complete stage 2 in early 2019.
“The variety is also higher yielding than any feed variety grown in Australia, so is likely to grab a big share of that market too.
“Already 1m tonnes is being cut this harvest, and we expect a big increase in area when it is fully approved for malting – the total combined malting/feed crop in Australia is about 9m tonnes. RGT Planet truly is becoming a worldwide phenomenon.”
